Privacy Policy
Last updated 10 October 2026
Bota helps people find places to eat and drink in Addis Ababa and share what they think of them. This policy explains what information the Bota app collects, how we use it, and the choices you have.
What we collect
- Account details: your name, username, email address and profile photo, when you create an account (directly or with Google).
- What you post: reviews, ratings, replies, photos, menus and suggestions you add. These are public and shown with your name.
- Location: your approximate or precise location, only if you allow it, to show places near you. You can turn this off in your phone’s settings at any time.
- Saves and preferences: places you save and the tastes you pick, to personalize what you see.
- App activity: how you use the app, such as screens viewed and searches made, to improve Bota.
- Diagnostics: crash reports and performance data, to find and fix problems.
- Device identifiers: a push notification token and an app instance ID, to send you notifications and count usage.
How we use it
- To run the app: your account, your posts, nearby places, saves and notifications.
- To personalize recommendations, such as “For you”.
- To understand usage, fix bugs and improve features.
- To keep Bota safe: moderating content and preventing abuse.
We do not sell your information and we do not show ads.
Who we share it with
Your public posts are visible to everyone using Bota. Otherwise we only share information with service providers that help us run the app, under their own privacy terms: Clerk (sign-in), Cloudinary (photos), Render and Neon (servers and database), PostHog (usage analytics), Sentry (crash reports), Google Firebase (push notifications), Gebeta (map tiles) and Brevo (email). We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is active. When you delete your account, your personal information is removed as described in Delete your account. Analytics and crash data are kept for up to 90 days.
Security
All data is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS) and stored with providers that protect it.
Your choices
- Edit your profile or remove your posts in the app.
- Turn off location or notifications in your phone’s settings.
- Delete your account at any time: here’s how.
- Ask us for a copy of your data or any other privacy question by email.
Children
Bota is meant for people 18 and over and isn’t directed at children.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date above and, for important changes, let you know in the app.
